Funk the Planet plays a proprietary blend of funky music of all eras around the clock, which includes funk (of course), soul, R&B, neo-soul, old school, boogie, new jack swing, hip-hop, dance, disco, jazz-funk, nu-funk, and nu-disco, However, for those listeners who prefer to explore specific themes, we also have special shows to showcase some of our favorite kinds of funk music. New shows are added frequently, so check here periodically for the latest schedule updates.

MONDAY

6pm to 8pm: Manic Purple Mondays

The music of Prince and the Minneapolis sound. This includes music from his associates and side projects, such as The Time and Sheila E., as well as collaborations with artists like Jesse Johnson, the early productions of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and songs Prince wrote or produced for others. This also features music from artists that were inspired by Prince’s pop/funk sound, including Ready for the World, The Jets, and many others.

TUESDAY

6pm to 8pm: New Jack Attack

A subgenre popular in the late 1980s through the mid-1990s that blended contemporary R&B, funk, and hip-hop. Much of this was drawn from the production style made popular by Teddy Riley. Popular artists include Keith Sweat, Guy, Bobby Brown, Bell Biv Devoe, Boyz II Men, En Vogue, Mary J. Blige, Blackstreet, Heavy D. and the Boyz, and Janet Jackson, as well as early 1990s Michael Jackson.

WEDNESDAY

6pm to 8pm: The B-Boy Hip-Hop Rewind

Hip-Hop of the Golden Era, from its earliest recorded appearances throughout the 1980s. This covers the origins from the Sugarhill Records days, the Def Jam era, and the beginnings of conscious hip-hop artists of the late 1980s, from the pioneers like Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Kurtis Blow, and Sugarhill Gang, through the next-gen sounds of Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J, and Whodini, to the innovative and conscious rap styles of Public Enemy, De La Soul, Queen Latifah, and many others.

THURSDAY

6pm to 8pm: A Brand New Funk

Funky new releases and artists who are keeping the funk alive today, from all over the world. Neo-soul, acid jazz, nu-funk, nu-disco, and a whole lot more. All the music featured here is from the past year.
